Autonomous Maritime Surveillance Systems Symposium
This Symposium will present Technologies capable of supporting Australia’s challenge in securing its islands, territories and oceans, which comprise a total area of 21,960,092 km2, with coastlines and estuaries exceeding 73,926km in length.

With a population of just 21 million people and as few as 2 people per square kilometre (with 90% of the population being along the east and south east coastlines of the continent), the vast majority of Australia’s western and northern coastlines are extremely vulnerable to incursions as a result of regional conflict, natural disasters, and global economic instability.

In response, the Australian and regional Governments are investing in the operational evaluation, trialling and acquisition of the latest Autonomous Maritime Surveillance Systems and Technologies – not only for defence purposes – but also for broad area surveillance and critical coastal security.

Key objectives are to reduce actual and potential illegal immigration, the trafficking of drugs, weapons and illicit substances, illegal fishing, infrastructure security, as well as law enforcement, disaster recovery, oceanographical, geophysical, meteorological and environmental monitoring.

From a national security perspective, the Australian Government’s new Defence White Paper and Defence Capability Plan, both identify maritime and airborne stand-off ISR and unmanned systems capabilities as priority requirements.

The Defence White Paper stated, “As a result of these priorities, the ADF of 2030 will need to be a more potent force in certain areas, particularly undersea warfare & anti-submarine warfare (ASW), surface maritime warfare (including air defence at sea), air superiority, strategic strike, special forces, Intelligence Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR), and cyber warfare. It is the Government’s judgement that these are the crucial areas which require particular attention to secure our unique strategic interests.”

In response – and with the view to providing exhibitors with the opportunity to promote and create awareness of relevant technologies, products and capabilities – Maritime Australia Limited has organised an Autonomous Maritime Surveillance Systems Symposium & Showcase at PACIFIC2010.

This informative international Symposium and associated Showcase will highlight the latest technology in maritime intelligence surveillance, reconnaissance and operational response. It will also feature the application of autonomous active and passive surveillance systems, complemented by unmanned vehicle systems for the protection of port, littoral coastline and off-shore assets, as well as maritime and coastal surveillance, monitoring and remote sensing.

The Symposium and Showcase will be a focal point at PACIFIC2010 and will provide participants with an opportunity to examine the development and application of autonomous surveillance technology systems equipment and capabilities.
